Gaia

GAIA, 6’ cast bronze bas-relief, was commissioned by a restaurant magnet
and his wife brought to us by one of Chicago’s pre-eminent interior designers. As the family had no knowledge of fine art, this gave us a teaching opportunity to help define and refine their tastes. Upon viewing the sculpture in clay, they shyly told us that their grandchildren were frequent visitors to their home, and that they were concerned about an undraped female breast in the sculpture.
We covered the figure in a gown. That is the responsibility and joy of being a commission artist…this sculpture is being made for this family to own and cherish. It must please them, not the artist.
